Born and raised in the rural Eastern Cape, Dr Mhlaba’s journey into medicine was shaped by early exposure to the realities of limited access to healthcare. Witnessing preventable illness, delayed treatment, and the silent suffering of underserved communities ignited a deep sense of purpose—to become part of the solution and contribute meaningfully to improving healthcare delivery.

In 2013, she was selected for the Nelson Mandela–Fidel Castro Medical Programme, where she began her medical training in Cuba. This experience profoundly influenced her clinical philosophy, grounding it in prevention, continuity of care, and the importance of building meaningful doctor–patient relationships. She later returned to South Africa to complete her clinical training in Pretoria and went on to complete her internship at Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital, gaining experience in a high-volume, high-acuity clinical environment.

Throughout her career, Dr Mhlaba has worked across diverse healthcare settings, including primary care, rehabilitation facilities, and private practice. Her work consistently revealed a critical gap between the care patients require and the care they receive—particularly among the elderly, where fragmented systems often leave families without adequate medical support or guidance.

In response, she founded Dr Mhlaba Health Centre, an initiative focused on delivering accessible, patient-centred, and dignified care. Building on this foundation, she established Eldercare24/7, a healthcare platform designed to provide continuous medical support, structured clinical oversight, and caregiver training. The initiative aims to improve quality of life for elderly patients, reduce preventable complications, and restore dignity in aging.

Dr Mhlaba is also the author of the Eldercare24/7 Clinical Training Manual, a comprehensive programme developed to equip caregivers and healthcare workers with practical, clinically grounded knowledge in managing common geriatric conditions, including dementia, hypertension, diabetes, falls, and palliative care needs.

Her additional qualifications include certifications in Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), Emergency Centre Management, and Basic Intensive Care Unit (ICU) training. She also holds a HarvardX certification in Fundamentals of Neuroscience, reflecting her continued interest in brain health and aging.

"At the core of my work is a commitment to compassionate, patient-centred care. I believe that medicine extends beyond diagnosis and treatment — it is about restoring dignity, building trust, and ensuring that every patient feels seen, heard, and supported."

Through her clinical work and entrepreneurial initiatives, Dr Mhlaba continues to build a healthcare model rooted in purpose, innovation, and service—one that redefines how elderly care is delivered in South Africa.
